Prescribing Controlled Drugs

This quick and simple online tutorial will enable you to prescribe controlled drugs (CDs) within the constraints laid out in the Misuse of Drugs Act. This will ensure your patients' take home or outpatient prescription can be dispensed without delay, and that you are not troubled by the pharmacy department to add details to or amend details on the prescription.

There are hundreds of different drugs and chemical variants covered by the legislation. These are categorised by both schedules (1-5) and classes (A-C) If in doubt check the BNF to see if the drug has a symbol next to it. For the purposes of normal practice in NHS Trust hospitals it includes:

Morphine, Diamorphine, Fentanyl, Oxycodone, Buprenorphine, Pethidine, Methadone, Dexamfetamine, Methylphenidate and Phenobarbitone.
